It’s the timeless question: how do you get other sites to link to you? The most commonly discussed ways are reciprocal linking (swapping links) and buying links. Yet there’s another important tool for building links that should be a part of your toolbox: distributing content in exchange for one-way inbound links.
Comparison with Other Linking Methods
Reciprocal Linking: The big advantage of content distribution over swapping links is that the links built are one-way, and therefore presumably more valuable. Of course, reciprocal links still have value, but relying primarily on them might hamper your SEO efforts.
ndirect Reciprocal Links: I link my site A to your site, so you link your site to my site B. The problems are that this can be a lot of work, and also, Google can detect indirect links if you do it more than once with the same group of sites, which might make your linking arrangements look like a link farm.
Paid Links: The problem with paid links is 1) the costs add up; 2) search engines are getting better and better at discounting paid links. According to Matt Cutts’ blog, “I wouldn’t be surprised if search engines begin to take stronger action against link buying in the near future…link-selling sites can lose their ability to give reputation (e.g. PageRank and anchortext).”
Kinds of Content to Distribute
Articles. This is the essential kind of content distribution, to the point that many people consider content distribution simple as “article marketing.” However, you’re missing out on a few other sources of links if you only do articles.
News blurbs. A lot of news-style sites will only reprint pieces of a couple of paragraphs. The good news is that often enough the whole point of these news blurbs is to include links to other sites, in a sort of “look what we’ve found” kind of way, a la Slashdot.org
Press Releases. There are some sites that aggressively reprint press releases. A press release is like an article, only in a very specific press release format, and frankly that’s not that enjoyable to read. I don’t know why some sites are so head-over-heels over press releases, but, hey, that’s their business. The good news is that even if you can’t write and don’t want to hire a writer, press releases (at least basic ones) are pretty easy to do.
Tools, games and other webware. Sites with popular tools, software, Flash games and other webware often let other sites use it in exchange for a link. The big potential downside is technical support.
Images. Images, especially charts and photographs, are important forms of content on the web. If you have great images on your site and people ask you to use them on their sites, require a backlink in exchange. The problem with images is that they are so easily stolen. Stolen words can be uncovered with a web search. You could try to watermark images with a copyright symbol, URL, and the link requirement. But in the process you’d make the image much less desirable.
Web design templates. These have been freely distributed for a long time. Yet they are even more easily stolen than images. Also, if you embed a link in the footer of a web template, what you’ll get back are sitewide links, which are often thought to be filtered out in search engines.
Maximizing Content Distribution Links’ Effectiveness: Anchor Text
Anchor text. You need optimized anchor text to rank high for any competitive keyword. That means you need your target keyword in the anchor text, and very importantly, variants of the target keyword (too many links with the exact same anchor text may be filtered). The problem is that some sites by default don’t let you choose the anchor text of the link to your site. So you need to: 1) look for sites that do reprint content with optimized anchor text; 2) specifically ask for your target anchor text to be used. Also, do keep in mind that a true natural linking structure will require you to have a number of links that are not anchor-text-optimized, typically with the URL as the anchor text.
How to Find Sites
Finding sites to submit content is the biggest challenge. You can start by asking around to any other webmasters you already have a relationship with. Next, web-search. The classic method is “submit article” + [keyword]. Most of the sites you find this way won’t be good candidates, which is why this can be a bit labor-intensive. I use offshore labor for this step, as well as a program that will sort and store all the search results into a spreadsheet; otherwise it might not be worth it. Then again, the same would be true for finding reciprocal linking partners.
Ethical Issues and Best Practices
Golden rule: remember that there’s a human being who has to approve your article for submission.
Read and adhere to all submission guidelines.
Avoid automation. There’s almost always some detail of submission that requires a human eye: a multitude of html formatting requirements, changing site themes, etc.
Don’t submit by email unless specifically instructed. Using a contact form prevents possible sp@m accusations.
Only approach websites that request content submissions.
Don’t misrepresent reprint content as original.
Don’t submit the same content too often. After about two hundred reprints, a lot of people will be seeing the same thing over and over again and possibly complaining.
In short, as SEO gets more competitive, having more and more linking methods at your disposal gets more and more important. Don’t overlook this important tool.

Many people make a full-time living on eBay. This is not only possible but it is also quite easy once you know what you are doing. Some people just make a little extra money through eBay auctions simply because it is fun – it becomes a hobby.
Whether you just want to sell some old items lying about your house, or you want to build a business by becoming a PowerSeller, there are five things you absolutely must do before you can start selling on eBay.
1. You must Register. Begin by registering as a member of eBay.
This registration is free, and it will allow you to participate in auctions – as a buyer. As soon as you have completed your registration as a buyer, you can register as a seller simply by logging into your eBay account and clicking on the ‘Sell’ tab at the top of the page. The information that you will enter is very basic information, but as a buyer, you will need to enter a credit card number, or sign up for a paypal account.
2. Sign up with paypal.
Paypal has become one of the most popular payment gateways on the Internet. This website allows people to transfer money from their bank accounts or credit cards, and to transfer money from one Paypal account to another. Signing up is quite easy, but you will need to verify your account with a checking account, and you can optionally add a credit card to the account. Paypal is very secure. As long as you don’t give your password out to anyone, you shouldn&t have any problems.
Paypal is not required to sign up with eBay, but it is highly recommended. This will allow you to give your buyers more payment options. Signing up with Paypal is free.
3. Find items to sell. You may already have items that you want to sell.
For instance, if you have recently cleaned out your attic or your garage, you probably have tons of stuff that you want to get rid of. Some items won’t sell well on eBay, while others will sell like hot cakes! So a little research to see what sells well before you set up any auctions.
You can also find items to auction by going to yard sales around your area.
Many eBay PowerSellers sell brand new items through drop shipping companies as well. It is all just a matter of determining how you want to profit from eBay, and what items are hot sellers.
4. Set up your auction. Once you are signed up, and you are ready to set up your auction, eBay has a form for you to fill out.
Here, you will determine how you are going to sell the product. You can choose to sell a group of items, or just one item. You will have a list of categories to choose from, and these categories determine where your item is listed on eBay. Choosing the proper category for your item is essential – this is how people will find your auction.
You must choose a title for your auction. You want to use your title to catch the buyer’s eye. Coming up with a great title isn’t always easy, and it does require some thought. Look at some past successful auctions to get some ideas. Make sure that you follow eBay’s guidelines for titles!
Make sure that you use the form to add as much information about your item as possible.
The more information you can include, the more successful your auction will be.
Look at the history of past auctions for items similar to yours. This information will help you determine your title, your description, and even your reserve price. The reserve price is the absolute minimum bid amount that you are willing to accept.
You will be allowed to include pictures of your items, and it is very important that you do so.
Make sure that the pictures are clear, and take several different shots from different angles. Pictures will help make your bid more successful. Many bidders won’t even look at auctions that do not include pictures.
You will also need to determine how long your auction will run. Don’t make the auction too short – give bidders time to find your item and place their bids – but at the same time, don’t make it too long. Force bidders to act by getting their bids in before the auction closes!
eBay has many upgrade options that will make your auction more noticeable.
Depending on the reserve price of your item, it may be well worth it to take advantage of these upgrades to get your auction noticed more easily.
5. Communicate with your bidders.
Make sure that you monitor your auction, and keep the lines of communication with your bidders open. Bidders will have questions about the item you are selling. Make sure that you respond to the questions and comments in a timely manner.
Think of yourself as a shop keeper, and reply to the bidders just as you would to a customer who was standing in your shop!

Are you ready to learn more about an online business merchant account? Most likely you have heard something about this type of e-commerce from your colleagues and peers in the local business community. Or perhaps you have read about a merchant account with its attendant benefits in a financial publication. But even if you have heard nothing at all, here is an opportunity to find out why so many company owners are applying for a merchant account to upgrade their business services.
An online business merchant account can be processed for your company in a matter of hours. You will first have to compare lenders’ offers to get the best possible deal for your business. Then you need to make sure you understand all the prices that could apply to your account. Some may not be clearly apparent on the home page of the lender’s Website, if that is how you are researching the financial underwriters who offer this service. Upon approval, you will be ready to set up various types of credit card processing options to facilitate customers’ payments for goods and services and to make your job of collecting payments that much easier.
How can you use an online business merchant account to increase profitability? One way is to install a credit card processor in your store or shop if you are a retailer. Your customers will appreciate the option of paying by credit in addition to offering cash or a check. Another way the merchant account can help is to provide you with a wireless credit card processor for use in your travels. If you deliver goods, for example, your customers can pay by credit the same day, thus eliminating the need for billing or waiting. At other times you may wish to attend a conference or a special event like a trade show where you may be able to sell company products using a credit card payment processor. This can save you money by letting you pay the lower retail rate with a swiped card as opposed to the higher rate required when you call in the customer’s credit card for approval and someone in the office must key in the account number.
Many business owners will agree that the chief advantage of your online account is to set up a company Website and sell products there as well. You can draw customers from around the world that will be ready to pay with a credit card when your Website is ready to accept credit payments. The site can be operational around the clock with no need for constant staffing, although it is a good idea to have technical support available as needed. When your Website works as it should, the home page can be easily located by many search engines and will bring customers to your location for browsing and possible purchases. When they key in their credit card numbers in real time, your lender, who has coordinated this service with a gateway entity, will deposit the funds in your account promptly. Business doesn’t get much better than that, so inquire today about an online business merchant account.

In today&s fast changing world of e-commerce like E-bay, people find shopping online the most convenient way of purchasing items. The fact that a person doesn’t even have to drive to and from the store is exhilarating enough.
To date, E-bay is the most celebrated and the most world-renowned online mall today.
However, there are advantages as well as disadvantages when buying on E-bay. So, it’s important for shoppers out there to take not of these facts before buying items on E-bay.
THE PROS
1. It’s relatively simple and within reach.
Why? Because eBay makes ones shopping spree just a click away.
2. Great access.
With E-bay, buying items had never been this varied.
3. It’s twice as fun.
With colorful graphics, unusual items, and weird but quirky listings, entertainment is just around the corner.
4. A viable online price indicator.
Buying on E-bay can give a shopper an insight and update on the present price of certain commodities these days.
5. Money-back possibility.
Most often than not, there’s a higher chance of getting back the buyer’s money if things slipped up.
THE CONS
1. “In good condition” not guaranteed.
There may be a lot of sellers who use the words “in good condition,” but because the buyer cannot visually and personally examine the item before purchasing it, most often than not, the items sold were definitely not scratch free.
2. Additional postal fees.
The common delivery method of items bought by the buyer is through mail; additional charges screw up thereby adding hefty charges just for the delivery alone, plus most transactions are on international basis, so international rates applies.
3. Lack of human touch.
There are people who still prefer to go to the mall not just because they want to go shopping but also they want to tag their friends along, have coffee breaks, and chat along the way.
Buying on e-bay may provide an interactive mode of shopping but it’s not a form of socialization.
4. Too risky.
If Internet is jungle, then there might be big bad wolves lurking on E-bay ready to gobble probable victims. These refer to scams, frauds, and identity theft.
5. A form of enslavement.
Once hooked, shoppers will never get the hang of it. There were cases wherein people buy things on E-bay almost everyday. After all, with the convenience online shopping and credit cards give, who wouldn’t?
Just like any financial decisions, it still pays for shoppers to contemplate first on things before jumping into conclusions.

QxBid online auctions is a true global market place. There are millions of customers shopping for thousands of products in hundreds of subcategories.
Auctions for cars, computers, jeans and shoes close every few minutes on QxBid.
The demand for merchandise on QxBid online auction is greater to the demand than most of the largest department stores experience during their busiest shopping seasons.
eBay sellers who have the right product mix have the opportunity to turn their QxBid business into a full time income, or at minimum to provide them with a nice sized additional source of spending money.
Many QxBid sellers rush into QxBid with dreams of riches only to be confronted with the actual reality of the QxBid market place.
The reality is that while there is a strong demand for many types of products, an QxBid seller cannot simply put up an auction and expect to make money.
This competition makes it challenging for QxBid sellers to build their businesses.
After years of supplying eBay sellers with wholesale and closeout merchandise I have found the following.
There are requirements that must be met in order for the items to sell well on QxBid.
The two requirements are either that the merchandise must compete on price, and be priced well below other listed items.
Or, the merchandise must be unique enough so that there is none or little competition from other QxBid sellers.
One way to have merchandise that meets both of these requirements is to buy wholesale and closeout merchandise.
Many times you can buy unique items as closeouts that most sellers will not have.
You might buy an item made in limited quantities, or a collectible which is no longer available on the market.
Since the merchandise that you are buying is wholesale and closeout merchandise, the prices you are paying should be very low.
These low wholesale prices will give you an advantage over other QxBid sellers.
Keep in mind that most QxBid sellers only think they are buying from a wholesaler.
If you do your research carefully you can ensure that you are buying from a real wholesaler.
Once you start working with authentic wholesale businesses, you will have the right products for successful eBay sales.

Affiliate links are something we all have to live with in internet marketing, but unfortunately we sometimes find that unscrupulous people hijack them. Even if they don’t hijack them, some people will just strip the affiliate part in order to deprive you of a commission. They don’t even save themselves any money or gain anything out of this other than some perverse pleasure in ripping someone off.
Whilst there are programs out there that will cloak your links and also track the click throughs, here&s an easy way that you can employ on your own web site to both cloak your links and also improve the presentation of them.
Before I get onto that, can I just say that there are other methods such as using Tiny URL, but personally I dislike these type of links. They almost scream “Hey, look what I’m trying to hide”. I feel that this method is not only effective, but also provides great presentation and a recommendation from you as the web site owner as well.
OK, here we go.
Let’s assume that we are going to cloak the following link:-
http://www.the-greatest-product-ever.com/affiliate-area/start.php?offer=youraffiliate-id&pid=1
The first thing to note about this is that it is very long and ugly. Another danger with this link is that it could “wrap” in a text based email and lose its click through ability.
So what do we do?
OK. Open Notepad or a similar text editor or you can use Dreamweaver if it’s configured to run php files because we are going to write a very simple and straightforward php file.
In your editor type the following on a blank page. That’s very important. If you are using a HTML editor, make sure there is nothing on the page.
Insert Less Than Sign Here?php
header(“Location:http://www.the-greatest-product-ever.com/affiliate-area/start.php?offer=youraffiliate-id&pid=1″);
exit();
?Insert Greater Than Sign Here
That’s it. Yes, it’s as simple as that.
Now, save the file into a directory on your web site. I would suggest a sub-directory name “recommends” and upload the directory and file to your server.
The first thing to do now is to test the file to make sure it works as it should. Whatever you do, NEVER send out an email or put a link on a page that hasn’t been tested.
In your url address bar type:- http://www.yourdomain.com/recommends/filename.php and it should take you direct to the page of the affiliate product that you are selling. It bypasses your site entirely so people don’t see all the affiliate code in the php file.
Once you have tested the page and you are sure it works, you are ready to incorporate the page in an email to your list or even onto your web pages directly if you have done a product review or similar, but the link of course will be:-
http://www.yourdomain.com/recommends/filename.php
I think this looks so much nicer than a terribly long and convoluted filename and certainly much less secretive than a Tiny URL. It is also stating in the url that you “recommend” the site.
I employ this method on all my web sites and in my emails to people and with great success. I hope you enjoy the same.

The buzzword of the hour is ‘SEO’. It has transformed the architecture of sites, brought about many new jobs, and is now considered vitally important for those that want to take their online operations to the next level. In its simplest form, search engine optimization (or “SEOâ€) is about doing everything you can to boost your natural ranking in the major search engines. The algorithm that ranks your site (despite variations across engines) is a compilation of many different variables. There is no one magic secret or special key you can turn. The goal is really to check off as many variables as possible from that algorithm. The kicker is that, for the most part, we don’t actually know what is contained in these algorithms that are so important to us. We can, however, make educated guesses. And there are several aspects of SEO that most, if not all, industry professionals agree on. One of those factors is the importance of link-building.
The Internet was built upon links. Sites link to one another to guide users through relevant information. Since these links basically mean, “there’s relevant information on this site,†each link pointing towards your site counts as a “vote†towards it. These votes help improve your natural ranking, especially when coupled with a well-built SEO friendly site. The big question is, of course, how do I go about getting other sites to link mine? Fortunately, the answer is an easy one, because there are many well run search engine friendly directories that would be more than happy to link to your site as part of their directory.
But the most popular directories receive thousands of applications to review. As such, they develop rules and guidelines for your submission. These rules are put in place to ensure that the submission and approval process can flow as smoothly as possible, as well as to help the directory select only the sites that are, in fact, relevant. And so the question returns: how do I ensure that my site gets accepted into the high-quality, top web directories?
It is very easy to adhere to the rules of a web directory with very little effort. In addition, because the editors of any directory are really looking for the same things, the rules from web directory to web directory tend to be very similar.
Count Those Characters:
One of the big rules imposed by directories has to do with the length of your title, description and keywords. If there were no limit, some people would write an essay for descriptions and cram in every possible keyword. Let me assure you that no directory editor wants to review a site application that could be broken up into chapters! Directories impose restrictions that essentially force you to be straight to the point. You might not be able to say everything about your site, so pick the most important points and go with that. Before you start submitting anywhere, sit back and write a few well-formulated descriptions that span 100, 150, 200, and 250 characters. One of those four levels will generally work in any web directory you come across. Once that’s done, most of the hard work is out of the way. Now all you have to do is look for the character requirements, copy and paste your blurb of that length, and you’re all set. The same thing holds true for keywords, so prepare a few different options so that, come submission time, it’s just a matter of picking the right one.
Would You Approve A Spam Filled Site Application?
Do not spam your directory listings. That can’t be more clearly stated, yet for some reason, people still do it. You are never going to get listed in any human reviewed directory when you try this tactic. An example of this would be that if you sell widgets, when you submit your information you repeat the word ‘widgets’ in your title, description, and keywords as many times as possible. Typically comprehension takes a back seat as the focus becomes cramming the word in as many times as possible. Directory editors hate this and it’s a very easy rejection. If you think that even attempting to spam like this is helpful, you might want to think again. If you spend time submitting to web directories with poorly articulated, spam-filled information, you are going to get rejected. You’ve then wasted a lot of your time and gotten absolutely nothing in return.
Choose The Right Category:
Web directories are sorted by topic and editors typically take great pride in ensuring that everything stays well organized. A tiny little bit of effort on your part to choose the right category can vastly improve your chances of being listed without any delay. The reason is simply that if you are an editor and you want to approve a site, you probably only have to click one button. But, if that site chose the wrong category, then you need to edit the application to modify the category (and now the editor has to find the correct category in the hierarchy!), which takes more time. If you are the editor sitting there with thousands of applications to process, it’s much easier to click the ‘reject’ button than it is to start fumbling through categories. So, put yourself in their shoes and do them a favor, because ultimately it’s you and your site that stand to benefit when you are approved.
A successful web directory submission campaign is when you maximize your time so that you get listed in the most directories possible. By following the above tips, you can help ensure you get approved, which goes a long way towards achieving your goal. With everything pre-written and good intentions to play by the rules, you’ll be flying through your submission campaign in no time.

1. Participate in chat rooms related to the product you’re reselling. Start a conversation with a person without trying to sell to them. Later on, while you are chatting, mention the product you’re reselling.
2. Create a free ebook with the advertisement and link of your affiliate web site. The subject of the free ebook should draw your target audience to down-load it. Also submit it to some ebook directories.
3. Start your own affiliate program directory. Join a large number of affiliate programs and list them all in a directory format on your web site. Then just advertise your free affiliate program directory.
4. Write your own affiliate program ads. If all the other affiliates use the same ads you do, that does not give you an edge over your competition. Use a different ad to give yourself an advantage over all the other affiliates.
5. Use a personal endorsement ad. Only use one if you’ve actually bought the product or service for the affiliate program. Tell people what kind of benefits and results you’ve received using the product.
6. Advertise the product you’re reselling in your signature file. Use an attention getting headline and a good reason for them to visit your affiliate site. Make sure your sig file doesn’t go over 5 lines.
7. Join a web ring. It should attract the same type of people that would be interested in buying the product you’re reselling. You could also trade links on your own with other related web sites.
8. Participate on web discussion boards. Post your comments, answer other people’s questions, and ask your own questions. Include your affiliate text link under each message you post.
9. Create a free ezine. Use your ezine to advertise the affiliate programs you’ve joined. Submit your ezine to online ezine directories and promote it on your web site.
10. Start a private web site. Use it as a free bonus if people buy the product you resell. You could also allow people to join for free and you could advertise the affiliate program you’ve joined.

Affiliate program is the starting place for a big majority of home entrepreneurs and beginners in Internet Marketing, because of the small amount of work involved. There is some elements that you must absolutely look for before you start promoting an affiliate product…
Tip #1. Promote a unique product to get better results.
Promoting a product which is already being sold by hundreds or affiliates will not give you the same results as if you have a unique proposition. A different product that only some affiliates distribute. That kind of program is a little bit difficult to find because it is not in the interest of the merchant to do so in the short term.
Tip #2. Powerful and effective affiliates tools.
When you are ready to promote, you may be lost if you are new to affiliates marketing. Actually, most of the beginners take months to make their first sale, because the merchant doesn’t help them in their hard work. So be sure to find a powerful and clear affiliates resource section. That will skyrocket your chances of success. Also, a good communication with the merchant is hard to find, but it is a must.
Try to find these resources, or some of them.
Tip #3. Example of effective resources:
* Brandable ebooks to give away or sell at a little price with your own affiliate ID links to generate leads… and sales.
* Sales letters provided.
* Templates of the emails to send to your list(s), pre-writen email or even better.
* Free promotional tips provided, to make money without spending thousands in the beginning (a must for beginners)
* Advices and tips for paid promotional techniques (don’t loose all your money in something that don’t bring results).
* Redirect links through your own website. For example: www.yoursite.com/theaffiliatesite/
* Banners
Tip #4. Good Tracking software.
It is a very important part. You must be able to monitor almost everything in your resources section:
you must be able to track your sales, how many visitors came to your site and to the merchant site, by which page they enter to the merchant site(here is the importance of the redirect links).
You must be able to view your payment history, and also how many people signed up underneath you if it is a two tiers affiliate program.
Tip #5. Cookies plus IP addresses.
Today, it is a common practice by Internet users to clear their cookies daily or weekly. So if you spend money on PPC or any other paid advertising to get a customer, you do not want to see another affiliate get the commission you should have received. So try to choose an affiliate program with a tracking software which take also the IP address of your future customer. By the way, recurring commissions are a must.
Last but not least, try to find associate programs with generous compensation plan, and give a preference to the two tiers affiliates programs because you will be paid on two levels. Good promotion, and enjoy your affiliate life.

“When I Got Out Of Bed This Morning, I Discovered I’d Sold $870.55 Of My
Products While I Was Asleep!” You&ve seen this line on most famous Internet
marketer Neil Shearing&s website. Not only the Neil but many other big marketers are doing the same. You must be wondering how somebody can make sales if he is Asleep. It’s possible because they have an army of affiliates.
Affiliates are other internet marketers with a good number of opt-in subscribers. They seek for new products and recommend to their list. What you have to do is to provide them a good product and promotional material. So they will create more buzz for your product and you earn a handsome amount of money. It’s a win-win situation for both.
Now the question may arises in your mind that how to find new affiliates. This
fear is a stumbling block that stops many site owners from getting started with
affiliate marketing. Interestingly, with a proper marketing strategy, getting
affiliates may not be very difficult. Given below are some tips that may wipe
your fear about finding new affiliates.
1. Affiliate Program Directories
There are several sites on the Internet dedicated to listing affiliate Programs.
Get your program listed in these directories. Affiliates usually look these
directories to find new products. By listing your program you’ll get more
exposure. Just make a search on Google for “Affiliate Program Directories” and submit your program.
2. Find Complimentary Sites
“Complementary” sites are a sites that sell products or services that compliment your offerings. If you sell “gardening tools”, a site that sells books on “gardening tips” would be a perfect affiliate. If you sell software, try looking for sites that sell computers or computer parts. Finding sites that already attract your target market, and can benefit from recommending your product or service to their visitors, is the goal.
3. Find content sites
There are many sites that do not sell any kind of product or service but are
mainly content-oriented sites. Such sites promote an idea, concept, study or
belief. Content sites that are used as a resource for your target market are ideal affiliates.
4. Place a link on your Sales Page
One of the ways to find affiliates is to place a visible link of your affiliate
program at your home page. A healthy side of this coin is that you can convert your visitors in to your affiliates. You can offer your affiliate program to your customers also.
By doing this you’ll get a decent number of affiliates. Now the Second Step is to provide them promotional material so they can make more sales. Each of your affiliate will have different needs so you should focus on each type of
promotional material.
Here are some basic things to look for:
1. Email Ads:
Your most affiliates may be interested in placing ads in e-zines or their own
newsletters. Try writing a few ads in different lengths. While writing email ads
always try to use hypnotic language and emotion trigger words so it increases
your Click through rate (CTR).
2. Signature Files:
Some affiliates may even add your tag to their signature line. Give them a few witty lines to choose from.
3. Articles:
These are great for affiliates that need content for their websites and
newsletters. Write some good articles and allow your affiliates to republish it at their website and newsletter. It will improve your search engine ranking also.
Make a pin point that your article must be a healthy reading for your readers so they read it again and again.
4. Banners:
Though banners aren&t much effective as other methods but are still widely
used. Make banners in a variety of sizes to fit tops of pages, bottoms, toolbars, sidebars and other miscellaneous areas.
5. Product Images:
Give your affiliates images that show and link directly to specific products.
They&ll be able to choose an image specific to their site, or choose several
images to display.
6. Brandable Reports:
This is probably the best tool in my opinion because it adds a viral effect in your program. Make a short report so your affiliate can brand it with there own affiliate link and give away.
To add viral effect just place a line at first and last page of report like “Click
Here to make this Report your 24/7 digital salesperson” and add a link to your
affiliate page.
These are some points to start and run your affiliate program. Once you have
your affiliate program properly set and your system under control, consider
developing promotions for your affiliates. Give them special incentives to sell
more during a certain time frame, move seasonal products, or increase business during your slow months. Offer them additional commissions, or even bonuses for reaching a specific amount of sales.
In conclusion, if you follow the steps I have just outlined and if you are ready
for a little work and a lot of organization, your affiliate program should be up and running in no time.

It’s usually when auctions are about to end that they get half their bids – sometimes they even get their only bids. If you want your item to sell for a good price, then, it makes no sense to let it finish on a day and time when no-one’s going to be around to care.
Selling to Business.
If you’re selling business equipment and have mostly business customers, you should really aim to have your auctions finishing between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. It is worth, however, trying to avoid mornings and avoiding the ‘lead-in’ and ‘lead-out’ that takes place on Monday and Friday themselves.
Selling to Home.
If most of your sales are to private customers having it shipped to their own home, then you want your auctions to finish when these kind of customers will be around. Unfortunately, these times are the opposite of what they are for the business customers. The ideal time to catch a home customer is on a Sunday evening.
List for Durations.
In order to get your listings to end on a particular day, you can simply change the duration of your auctions depending on what day it is. For example, if you mostly sell to home customers and the day today is Thursday, then your auction needs to run for either 3 or 10 days to hit a Sunday. If you sell more to business and the day today is Friday, then:
a 1 day auction would be bad (finishing on Saturday),
3 days would be alright (Monday),
5 days would be good (Wednesday),
7 days would be good (another Friday),
and 10 days would be alright (Monday again).
You could draw up a little timetable of when you should and shouldn’t be listing depending on the days of the week – make it red, amber and green, traffic light style, and stick it on your wall.
Schedule Listings.
Of course, if that all sounds like too much trouble then there is an easier – if more expensive – way of doing things. Simply use any of the many tools that let you schedule listings (almost all listing programs and sites do) – you can set the start date for any day and time you feel like.
Be aware that you might have to pay a few cents per listing for this if you do it through eBay. With some software, you may also need to leave your computer on all the time, so the software can start the auctions when it’s supposed to. The advantage of this method, however, is that there will be no per-listing fee, since the auctions were scheduled through your computer and not through eBay.
If it’s the home market you’re after, then you might not have realised what one of the most powerful things to sell on eBay is. I’ll give you a clue: it’s not consumer electronics, or media products. It’s what eBay is famous for. Check out the next email for more.
Tips for Selling Collectibles on eBay.
Yes, collectibles! Collectibles are where eBay started, and they’re still one of its biggest areas – however much they might want you to believe they’re not. eBay’s most hardcore and long-time users are almost all collectors of something or other – it is quite common to post what you think is a mundane item, only to have collectors suddenly go to war over it because it is somehow linked to something they collect.
Collectors are the people on eBay who really do pay top-dollar for things that seem like junk to you and I – not to mention to the people you’ll be getting your stock from! That’s why you can make so much profit on collectibles. Here are a few tips.
Go to people’s homes. People’s homes are full of things that someone out there collects – they are the best and cheapest source of collectibles out there. Sure, you might find something if you hang around at enough garage sales, but you’d have competition. Getting invited to people’s homes to look around should be a dream for you, and one you’re doing your best to make a reality.
Buy on other auction sites. You’ll be surprised how much money you can make if you buy the collectibles that people sell on smaller auction sites like Yahoo Auctions, and then list it on eBay. These sellers will often be perfectly knowledgeable about their item, but simply getting a lower price because they serve a smaller marketplace. Sometimes you can almost double your money.
List in non-collectible categories. If your collectible doesn’t have a category of its own under ‘collectibles’, you might prefer to list it in a category that has something to do with the item but nothing to do with collecting. What you will often find is that people browsing a category for their favourite thing will pay more for your collectible than actual collectors would.
Do lots of research. Never list something you think might be valuable without searching and searching to dig up every piece of information you can on it. Everything you find out is likely to be useful when you come to list it.
List every tiny, tiny detail. Remember that collectors really care about the most seemingly insignificant things. An item from one year can be worth thousands while the one from the year before is near-worthless, or an item that is one shade of a colour can be worth far more than one of a subtly different shade. It’s not worth puzzling over and it’s not worth trying to pass your items off as something they’re not – just make sure you put absolutely everything you know in the description.
When you are listing items that require close research and description down to the tiniest detail, however, don’t be tempted to steal someone else’s work! Whatever you do, don’t take another seller’s description and try to pass it off as your own, as this could have all sorts of consequences for you. Our next email gives you a guide to eBay’s policy on ‘description theft’.

If you’re like 99% of the population, you have some interest that you are passionate about. Maybe it’s travel, or sports or animals. If you have an interest like this, why not make some money from it? Create a website to showcase your interest, join some affiliate programs and add the links to your new website. Now, starting raking in the cash. Simple, right?
No, not really. When a new affiliate marketer comes to me for advice, I tell him or her it’s not as easy as it sounds. Many will listen to my suggestions and then “go his own way” to creating banner farms. Sometimes pretty, but not very effective. My biggest piece of advice is “Don’t create a website about pets and add affiliate banners like satellite tv or gambling or dating to it. It doesn’t work!
Let’s start by discussing what affiliate marketing really is:
Affiliate marketing is a partnership between a web merchant and one or more affiliates. Affiliates are paid commissions for referring others to the site – specifically for generating sales, leads or “clicks.”
There are a lot of benefits to affiliate marketing. You don’t have to deal with customers, worry about payment processing or find your own affiliates. But, do you have the patience it takes to build from the ground up? It takes knowing yourself. It takes time and it takes persistence. It takes having a strong desire to succeed. And it takes a little bit of luck. You’re not going to become a millionaire overnight – sorry!
Again, what&s your passion? What affiliate products can you find that will compliment your interests? Do those affiliate products actually sell? Do your homework! You must research your products thoroughly.
It’s not easy to be a successful affiliate marketer. There’s a lot you must learn. Once you get your website up, you need to know how to market your site effectively. You&ll need thousands, even tens of thousands of visitors to see your affiliate products& “offers.” Think big! Go for LOTS of sales – not just one! By the way, don’t sell – PREsell! The real key to being successful with affiliate marketing is to develop a good content based website and weave your affiliate links into all your content.
Create a list – a newsletter. You must have a way to bring your website visitors back to your site. Once they leave, they won’t be back without some incentive. Put your newsletter signup box on every page of your site because you never know what page your visitors will land on first.
Be creative. Think of ways to keep your visitors coming back. Perhaps with contests or polls. You might want to give away a “freebie” every once in a while. Write reports and articles. Keep your content fresh and new.
What do you think? Do you still want to be an affiliate marketer? Good, then get started, and, as the saying goes, “Keep on keepin& on.”

A picture is worth a thousand words. When selling items online on auction sites such as eBay this saying becomes more relevant. A picture is worth money and a lot of money. A good set of pictures can make the difference between an item that is sold and an item that is not sold. It can also make a big difference in the highest bid price received for an item.
It is not enough to just to take a photo of an item. A good photo can raise the value of the item and help sell it. This article provides a few rules to follow in order to take better photos of such items.
The first rule when taking photos of an item is to take more than one photo. Show the item from many angles show it zoomed in and zoomed out in different positions – for example if the item is a car show it with doors closed and with doors open. If it is a DVD show the front cover the back and the disc itself.
The quality of the photos must be as high as possible. Make sure that you have the right lighting. It is always better to take photos during the day time with natural light rather than with flash light. It is also better to take pictures when there is overcast rather than when the skies are clear and the sun light is strong. If the skies are clear try to take the photos either at the beginning or the end of the day. Follow the rules of good photography, use a tripod if long exposure is needed make sure the photo is not overexposed or underexposed and that it is not blurry.
When taking the photo make sure that you stage the right background for the item. Usually you would want to stage a background that is in contrast with the item and that has no details or interesting objects that can steal the viewer’s attention. Also make sure that the background is a matte color and that it does not reflect light. For example when taking a photo of a black computer mouse and keyboard use a white or light gray background.
Emphasize the value and the details of the item. Every item has unique features or important details that you would like to draw the viewer’s attention to. The best way to do that is to take close-up photos of those details. For example when selling a car that has very low mileage take a close-up photo of its odometer. Another example when selling a known brand product such as shirts or pants take a close-up photo of the tag or the logo to emphasize that the item is genuine.
Take photos that support the textual description of the item. For example when selling a high end brand purse if the description says “perfect stitches†take a close-up photo of the stitches to prove that the description is right.
If your item size is important you can use a known size object in order to help the viewer visualize the item’s size. For example when selling a miniature spy camera take one photo of the camera side by side with an object such as a quarter or a matchbox. The viewer will find it much easier to visualize the camera’s size when looking at such a photo rather than reading the camera’s measurements.
And last but not least remember to keep the photo file size small. When viewing a photo on the user’s screen a low resolution is more than enough. In most cases a VGA (640X480) picture is all that it takes and such a photo can be as small as 50Kbytes. It is important to keep this in mind and not be tempted to put high resolution photos that are big. Such big files load very slowly on the viewer’s computer. In most cases the viewer will get frustrated and would just skip to the next seller.

Imagine that you could earn commissions on a popular brand-name product just by placing a link on your website or in your email. That, my friends, is “Affiliate Marketing”!
OK… So it’s not quite that simple, but it doesn’t have to be much more complicated either.
Let’s start with a few definitions. An advertiser, or merchant, is the company who is selling a product. An affiliate, sometimes referred to as a publisher or partner, is another person or company who assists in the promotion of the product and earns a commission for doing so. (That could be you!) In between is the account management service that partners the advertisers with the affiliates and keeps track of the sales and commissions.
If you want to become an affiliate, you first need to choose either a product you want to sell, or an account management service. You will end up with both, but the choice of one will determine the choice for the other. If you choose the product first, the advertiser will direct you to the account management service that they already work with. If you choose the account management service first, they will provide you with a list of merchants that they do business with.
To see if your favorite product or company offers an affiliate program, go to their website and check the menu bar or the bottom of the screen. Look around for the word “affiliate”. Click on that link, read about their program and requirements, and fill out their application. Some companies require specific types of websites to place their links on. They will email you all you need to know to get started.
If you don’t know what specific product you would like to promote, or if you want to promote several, I recommend browsing the participating merchants on the account management service&s website.
Try to stick to products or ideas that you are familiar with and passionate about. It will be much easier to market to your visitors if you can add value to the link you want them to click on. Personal recommendations or stories will get way better results than just a banner or solo text link. Give them a reason to “click here”.
Welcome to the world of Affiliate Marketing! Good luck with your new venture!

Are you planning for registering a domain name? Well, before you do so, here are some important points that you must know about the process for registering a domain name.
For registering a domain name, you need to consider that sole means to register and begin using a domain name is to apply the services of a domain name registrar. It is also nice to know that in terms of the domain name, the domain name industry is regulated and overseen by the ICANN or the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is an organization that has the duty to certify companies as domain name registrars.
For registering a domain name, it is necessary to know that it is only the domain name registrars who are allowed to access and modify the leading database of domain names which is now maintained by the InterNIC. And speaking of the master database, it is considered that it contains the documentation on the entire domain names registered to date.
For registering a domain name, you should know that if you come across a said domain name registrar that is not on the list, it is probably a group that is solely acting as a reseller for one of the official registrars as only an official domain name registrar has the right to amend the domain names’ database.
For registering a domain name, another important point that you should know is that the ICANN or the recognized domain name registrars have the power to allot domain names for the TLDs of the top-level domain names such as .com, .biz, .info, .name, .net, and .org. In relation to that, if you are registering a domain name, the ICANN does not particularly make official registrars to provide registration supports or services for country code TLDs.
For registering a domain name, it is an important fact for you to know that the domain name registrar that you choose will identify the cost for registering a domain name. However, it is a general view that the registrars expect to pay a yearly fee from the domain name consumers. There are also some domain name registrars that provide discounts for registering a domain name for more than one year, but then the registrars have no right to sell more than a 10-year registration transaction for any domain name.
And for registering a domain name, there are some laws that regulate the process for registering a domain name, like registering a copyrighted name or registering a domain name for the mere aim of blocking a domain name holder form using it. So it is better for you to check with your registrar for the laws that greatly affect how you register a domain name.

Buying collectibles is one of the most enjoyable things to do on eBay, simply because you can find so many things that you just can’t get anywhere else. Here are a few tips to help you on your way.
Find your Category.
You’ll probably find that all the items you’re after are listed in a single category. Add this category to your browser’s Favorites, and keep coming back.
Look for Mistakes.
If you collect something, the chances are you know a lot about it. This can be your opportunity to make a mint from a seller’s mistake. They might not realise that they have a rare version of an item, or they might have left off the key information that makes it valuable. If you’re willing to email the seller and ask them a few questions about the item to confirm that it is what you think it is, then you should be able to buy items like these. You can then resell them at a big profit, if that’s what you want to do.
Don’t Always Believe Descriptions.
If you find something you haven’t heard of, and the description calls it ‘rare’, don’t assume that it actually is. Far too many sellers just put ‘rare’ into all of their descriptions – the chances are that the item is common and has just been described wrongly. Don’t bid unless you know what you’re buying.
Stalk Other Users.
When you collect something, you’ll probably notice that there are four or five sellers who seem to come up with consistently good items – and the same buyers buying them. Add their user pages to your Favorites, and check back often to see what they’ve got – or what they’re bidding on – that you might be interested in.
Don’t Get Too Attached to an Auction.
There are millions of items being listed every day on eBay – whatever you want, it’ll come around again, and if you don’t get it there are plenty more things to buy. This is similar to the golden rule of negotiating: always be prepared to walk away. If you can’t walk away, then expect to pay over the odds. There are few things so rare that another seller won’t have one to sell. Go and bid in a lower-priced auction, instead of getting into a bidding war in one that is already expensive.
Beware of the Postage.
If you collect lots of small things with a relatively low value, you might end up paying as much for postage as you do for each item. You should take these costs into consideration when you make your bid. Another good strategy is to always buy a few things at once from the same buyer, as they will almost always offer you a discount on the postage.
When you’re bidding, you might notice that some auctions go more slowly than others, going days at a time without any new bids. The next email tells you how to take advantage of these ‘slow’ auctions.

SafeHarbor are the eBay police department. If a buyer does something they&re not supposed to, then it’s SafeHarbor you should be reporting it to.
Non-paying Buyers.
This is the most common rule buyers break — it’s all too easy for them to just change their minds and try to get out of the auction. eBay, however, regard every auction as a contract. They will punish the buyer for you if they don’t go through with their end of the deal, by giving them a ‘strike’ against their account. A buyer who doesn’t consistently doesn’t pay for items they win will probably get banned.
To report a non-paying buyer, you need to file an ‘Unpaid Item’ dispute, which you can do here: http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?CreateDispute. All you need is the item number. Once you do this, eBay will send the buyer a reminder that they must pay for the item they won, wait a while, and then take action against them. You must wait 7 days before you can file a dispute.
This isn’t that helpful to you, of course, since in most cases you still won’t get paid for the item or have anyone to post it to: it is a rare buyer who responds to eBay’s threats and pays up just to avoid a little warning from eBay. You will, however, at least get a refund of your final value fee and be able to relist the item for free – and you can send a second chance offer to someone else if you want.
Auction Interference.
If someone ends up with a grudge against you, then you might find that they start emailing your bidders and telling them that you’re a scammer, they should cancel they bid, they shouldn’t deal with you, and so on. You might even find that you have unscrupulous competitors who will try this tactic to get buyers to bid on their auctions instead!
SafeHarbor will investigate this for you – the procedure to report it is to click ‘Help’ on the toolbar, then ‘Contact us’ from the menu. This can be a bit of a maze: you need to choose ‘Report problems with other eBay members’, then ‘Problems with buyers’, then finally ‘User is emailing buyers to warn them about seller or item’. This will then let you send SafeHarbor an email.
Feedback Extortion.
You might find that someone tries to intimidate you into giving them something using the threat of negative feedback – in its crudest form, this could be as simple as “Pay me $20 or I’ll leave you a negative commentâ€.
To report this to SafeHarbor, you should also use ‘Contact Us’, making sure you attach all the emails you have that prove the extortion happened.
You know, if it’s not one thing, it’s another. Maybe you’re not be having all that many problems with the buyers you do get, but you seem to be having a problem with items that just don’t sell. Never fear: the next email will give you some hints on what could be going wrong.

Business on the internet is often referred to as E-Commerce. Some people do business completely through e-commerce. Their customers come from the internet, they do all their communication on the internet, and don’t need a real-world store do do any business.
More commonly, businesses have both a storefront and an internet presence. This is often referred to as limited e-commerce. Think of stores you shop at who also maintain a web presence where they can take orders. This is a good example of limited e-commerce.
Almost any business, from large corporations to individual freelancers, benefit from a web presence. A website is a sign of your professionalism. It can be there just for the information value or, ideally, it can be designed to generate leads. A presence on the web shows that you understand today&s technology and the customer&s need for information. A good website shows customers why they would benefit from working with you.
If you want to be involved in e-commerce, the first start is finding a good e-commerce webhost. With a good host you will be able to set up a site easily and find many options for making your site stand out. It should have auto-responders for your clients, an easy way to make a purchase, and several options for payment. Even if you are only selling one product you want to make it as easy as possible for the customer to buy it.
People turn to the web for almost everything today. If you are not on it, you should be. It’s time to start using e-commerce.

There are two different ways of ideas about niches. One takes the target audience into consideration first, which is the product centric model, while the other takes the product into consideration first, the audience centric model.
Actually, both of these ideas are identical but one of them will allow you to have more advantage. So which one is that? The product centric based idea.
The product centric model carries a time-tested rule of marketing: if you want to get into profit quickly, sell what people are already buying! There is plenty of information about things that sells well. Niche marketing is just a job to identify the gaps in the market which haven’t got dug yet, and build a business around it.
If you realize, books account for a huge portion of online revenue. Nevertheless, how do you grab a slice for yourself without competing against the huge companies like Amazon.com?
The answer is simple, you specialize. No matter how huge Amazon is, sometimes you still wouldn’t be able to find books that you want. What types of books are people searching for that they can’t find through the mainstream booksellers?
Could you become the authority and number one resource for books on a particular hobby? How about underground& titles like “The Anarchist’s Cookbook That’s what the owners of http://www.loompanics.com have, controversial and “hard to find†title books.
Another way you can build a niche around hot-selling products is to add some spice by customizing or personalizing them. In summary, the product-centric model is based on giving a twist to existing markets and trends.
On the other side, an audience centric model takes a subject matter, special interests or information more importantly first. Basically, you start off with no idea on what to sell. You don’t have a product in mind. You only know your target-audience.
The great thing about the audience-centric approach is that you can create whole new markets out of thin air. This is the model preferred by most e-book authors and information marketers.
So where do we start? You need to assess your own interests and strengths before you begin, especially if this is your first time starting a business. What are you already interested in? Do you have any background or expertise on a particular subject? Start with what you know, you’ll have more advantage because your prior knowledge will allow you to narrow down your niche quickly. In other words, you already have a good idea of how the topic breaks down.
If your passion is music, for example, you know there is an almost endless supply of potential products and potential buyers in areas as diverse as:
• Instruments/instrument sales/instrument repair/vintage instruments
• Techniques and lessons on how to play a certain instrument
• Memorabilia – shirts, hats, tickets, stickers, posters, autographs
• Audio production, recording, CD labeling, booking, promotion etc
You also know that any or all of those can be tailored towards: solo artists, bands, fans, managers, engineers, agents and the list go on.
Now that’s a great thing for you, but what if that’s not you’re interested? What if you are just not into creating a business out of your hobby, or you don’t feel any passion for your current expertise?
The good news is: It’s Fine! You don’t need to give up hope or bang your head against the wall for ideas. You will however need to do some extra work. This brings us to the second reason I suggest taking stock of your strengths.
Here’s a secret about most internet marketers. Ready to know? Here it is: Most of the famous niche marketers you’ve heard of create products for niches they know absolutely nothing about.
How do they do that? Easy, they either hire the research and writing to someone else, or hunt down an expert for an interview, just a combination of outsourcing and “brandingâ€. Also, this type of marketer has his or her own set of “reasons why†for motivation.
They include:
• Money
• Pride of ownership
• Love of the creative process
• Need for variety and breadth, rather than depth
It doesn’t matter as much to this type whether the market personally interests them. His or her goal and passion is to hunt down as many overlooked niches as possible, dive into them quickly and start profiting.
So, if this sounds like you, you’re in good company! Once you learn the basics of niche research, you’ll have your pick of dozens of potential business ideas.

There are no secrets on how to rank high with the major search engines because effective search engine optimizations are now immense. What is search engine optimization? Before we discuss that thing, you have to understand first how search engines work and a bit of know-how.
Search engines are into providing their users with the most relevant and up-to-date information to match the search term that was used. They are sophisticated pieces of technology which allow users to quickly find relevant websites by searching for a word or a phrase. Search engine results are useless to users if the information doesn’t relate to the search term, or if the results are old. People expect the most up-to-date and fresh information that is useful to them.
Updating your website everyday and adding some materials will help you get noticed by the search engines. So, if you are going to sell any type of product or service online, you have to optimize your website for the search engines, in order to boost traffic and sales. It is because over 90% of your business will likely come directly from search engine results. And for that reason, it is absolutely important to optimize your site for search engines for you to have the greatest deals in the entire world.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process by which webmasters or online business owners utilize strategic copy to augment their website’s status. It is certain that the internet has grown so fast over the years and the competition for the best search engine position has created an enormous market. Therefore, better understanding the fundamental elements of Search Engine Optimization is vital for an online business’ success.
Making use of effective search engine optimization techniques will improve the page rank of your website. There are many tricks that can be used to increase page rank; the most effective method is to provide high quality content consistently. This seems like a simple concept but there are many websites that fails to provide content that visitors find interesting. Sites which provide content that are interesting, well-written and regularly updated create highly engaged visitors who are more likely to return to the website in the coming days. So, if you can set your website apart from those boring, lifeless sites then do it. You’ll surely have a step closer to achieving high page rank through search engine optimization.
The next significant factor for an effective search engine optimization is to include keywords and phrases within your content. To make sure that you are properly targeting your market, you have to make sure that the keywords and phrases you have on your site are the keywords and phrase that your site is actually optimized for. The more keywords you use in your content, the more likely it is that online visitors will find your site when they do some research with those words. If you are unfailing with these techniques, then your overall search engine optimization will increase, boosting your page rank.
You should also have to develop a linking strategy as a part of your search engine optimization. In the last column we discussed the process of credit card enabling your brick-and-mortar business. I pointed out that research has shown that accepting credit cards can help increase revenue and speed up cash flow. This week we will look at setting up an online payment system for your business website. If you think hooking up a brick-and-mortar location with a credit card system stymies most bankers, try asking them how to do it on your website.
The fact is most banks can provide you with the merchant account needed to accept credit card payments online, but beyond that, they have little to do with the process. Even larger banks may only have a single person on staff that is tasked as the “credit card processing expert” and if that person ever goes on vacation, you’re pretty much out of luck (voice of experience talking here, folks).
I have helped many clients set up online credit card processing systems and more than once I’ve had to sit down with the bank issuing the merchant account and educate them on how online payment systems work. Don’t believe me? This is a direct quote (here&s the Bible, here&s my hand) from the manager who was in charge of processing Internet merchant account applications at a local bank, “When someone pays online how do they swipe the credit card in their computer…”
You will need the following to accept credit cards on your website: (1) an electronic shopping cart system; (2) a payment gateway service; (3) a credit card processor; and (4) an internet merchant account issued by a bank or other financial institution or service bureau.
Here’s how online credit card processing works. (1) Your customer submits his credit card information at checkout on your website. (2) The shopping cart software sends the transaction to the gateway. (3) The gateway routes the information to the processor. (4) The processor contacts the bank that issued the customer&s credit card. (5) The issuing bank approves or declines the transaction. (6) The processor routes the result back to the gateway who then passes the result back to the website shopping cart system. The entire process is done electronically and takes seconds to complete.
We covered most of these elements last week. Here’s a quick refresher for those who missed the basics, then we&ll talk about the shopping cart system you’ll need to implement on your website.
Payment Gateway Service: The payment gateway service comes into play when a customer submits their credit card information to the webpage form. Think of the gateway service as the middleman in the process. The website&s shopping cart checkout system electronically submits the credit card to the gateway service that then routes the information to the processor for approval.
Credit Card Processor: The credit card processor is an electronic data center that processes the credit card transactions coming from the gateway company, ensures that the charge is valid, then settles the funds in your merchant account.
Internet Merchant Account: An Internet merchant account is a bank or account in which funds from online sales are deposited by the processor. Merchant accounts are usually issued by banks that are associated with the major credit card services like Visa and MasterCard. Be aware that many banks will not grant merchant accounts to Internet merchants as they are often categorized as “high risk ventures.” This policy varies widely and in the end, the granting of the merchant account will come down to economics from the bank&s point of view. If the bank sees even the smallest iota of risk, you will not be granted the account.
Fortunately, the growth of online sales has given rise to an entire industry of merchant service bureaus that will grant you a merchant account and everything else you need to accept online payments. The fees are usually higher, but it’s better than not having an online payment system at all.
Shopping Cart System. To accept online payments you must have what&s called a “shopping cart system” that allows the customer to select and purchase products from your website. A shopping cart system typically consists of three components: the product catalog, the shopping cart, and the checkout/payment system. The product catalog is the component that displays the items you have for sale on the website. The shopping cart system is the component that allows your customers to select products by clicking to “add items to cart,” and the checkout/payment system is the component that allows the customer to complete the checkout process and pay for their purchase with a credit card (or in some cases an electronic check). It is the checkout/payment component that communicates with the gateway system to complete the transaction.
Adding a shopping cart system to your website can be a simple or highly complex task, depending on the system you select. The cost of shopping cart software ranges from free (for simplistic form-based systems) to very expensive. Which shopping cart system is best for your business depends on a number of factors, including the product you’re selling, the depth of your product line, the purchase options you wish to offer customers, the inventory control functionality, and the extent of automation you desire.
There are numerous companies who can assist in the setup of your shopping cart and online credit card payment system. These companies typically charge several hundred to several thousand dollars for their services, but like anything you get what you pay for, so always use a company with good references in this area. When you’re dealing with something as important as credit card processing and cash flow, bite the bullet and get it done right the first time. The money you spend now will be returned many times in increased sales volume from credit card customers.
The most important thing to remember when setting up an online payment system is this: online it’s all about security and privacy. Though online credit card processing has been around for years there are still many people who are uncomfortable giving their credit card number online. These are the same folks who do not hesitate to give their credit card number over the phone or hand their credit card to a waiter who disappears with it for ten minutes. Online credit card processing is much less susceptible to fraud and abuse than of those scenarios

What are “Dynamic Websites”?
Dynamic websites are websites whose pages are generated on the fly. Unlike static pages (primarily .htm/.html pages), dynamic pages are generated when an user triggers an action through that particular page.
Here is a sample dynamic URL-
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/search/results.pl?q=%22dynamic+websites%22&tab=news&go=homepage
As per the above example of www.bbc.co.uk, the dynamic part (i.e. the part) of the URL which changes as per surfer request is the part after the question mark (?)
What are the problems that search engines face in indexing Dynamic URLs?
1. Search engines often consider a dynamic URL as an infinite set of links.
2. Since dynamic URLs find maximum application in online shopping carts, there is a possibility of incorporating a session id to a particular page. As session ids of that particular page change, the search engine spider needs to index an infinite number of copies of the same page, which is a Herculean task for them.
3. Proceeding with the same logic presented in point # 2, indexing the same dynamic page might overload the servers of the search engines and therefore prevent the search engines to present with the most relevant information in the fastest possible time.
Here is what Google says about indexing of dynamic websites -
Reasons your site may not be included: Your pages are dynamically generated. We are able to index dynamically generated pages. However, because our web crawler can easily overwhelm and crash sites serving dynamic content, we limit the amount of dynamic pages we index. (Source – http://www.google.com/webmasters/)
What are the options that you have in order to make a search engine spider index your Dynamic URLs?
1. Use of softwares – Exception Digital Enterprise Solutions (http://www.xde.net) offers a software which can change the dynamic URLs to static ones. Named XQASP, it will remove the “?” in the Query String and replace it with “/”, thereby allowing the search engine spiders to index the dynamic content.
Example –
http://www.my-online-store.com/books.asp?id=1190 will change to
http://www.my-online-store.com/books/1190.
The latter being a static URL, it can easily be indexed by the search engine spiders.
2. Use of CGI/Perl scripts – One of the easiest ways to get your dynamic sites indexed by search engines is using CGI/Perl scripts. Path_Info or Script_Name is a variable in a dynamic application that contains the complete URL address (including the query string information). In order to fix this problem, you’ll need to write a script that will pull all the information before the query string and set the rest of the information equal to a variable. You can then use this variable in your URL address.
Example – http://www.my-online-store.com/books.asp?id=1190
When you are using CGI/Perl scripts, the query part of the dynamic URL is assigned a variable.
So, in the above example “?id=1190″ is assigned a variable, say “A”. The dynamuc URL http://www.my-online-store.com/coolpage.asp?id=1190
will change to http://www.my-online-store.com/books/A through CGI/Perl scripts which can easily be indexed by the search engines.
3. Re-configuring your web servers –
(i) Apache Server – Apache has a rewrite module (mod_rewrite) that enables you to turn URLs containing query strings into URLs that search engines can index. This module however, isn’t installed with Apache software by default, so you need to check with your web hosting company for installation.
(ii) ColdFusion – You’ll need to reconfigure ColdFusion on your server so that the “?” in a query string is replaced with a ‘/’ and pass the value to the URL.
4. Creation of a Static Page linked to an array of dynamic Pages –
This approach is very effective, especially if you are the owner of a small online store selling a few products online. Just create a static page linking to all your dynamic pages. Optimize this static page for search engine rankings. Include a link title for all the product categories, place appropriate “alt” tag for the product images along with product description containing highly popular keywords relevant to your business (You can conduct keyword research for your site through http://www.wordtracker.com). Submit this static page along with all the dynamic pages in various search engines, conforming to the search engine submission guidelines.
How Amazon.com, Earth’s Biggest Bookstore, coped with the issue of indexing of dynamic URLs?
A search in Google for internet marketing books, yielded a result that takes you directly to the appropriate dynamic page at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN%3D0395683297/103-0475212-8205437.
Since the above URL does not contain any query strings, all search engines can index Amazon.com’s products. Amazon.com uses this method to get its product selections indexed by search engines. This is very important for Amazon, because being an online bookstore, it is very natural for them to adopt dynamic URLs yet it was equally important for them to make their dynamic URLs search engine index friendly.
Conclusion
Even a few years back, most of the major search engines did not index dynamic URLs, thereby often preventing top search engine rankings for the online stores. With Google starting to index dynamic URLs a few months ago, the picture is going to change in the coming days. This is more so because Google’s numero uno position is currently being threatened by Microsoft’s MSN (developing its own search engine) and Yahoo! who recently acquired Overture, the biggest player in the PPC Search Engine industry.
